A possum which tried to flee by running alongside a department was shaken off or knocked down with a stick (Grey 1841, vol. 2, p.287). The most usual technique of taking the comb possum was to extricate it from its haunt in a hollow tree. This species was widespread and broadly distributed all through the realm; it sheltered within the broken limbs of large timber.
