(1886, p. 330) states that before it was cooked, the thigh bones of the possum have been invariably bent again and damaged, “this being a superstitious observance which is rarely uncared for “. The main by-product from the possum was its fur, which was spun into lengthy strands to be used as belts and bands (see Meagher in preparation). A possum which tried to flee by running alongside a department was shaken off or knocked down with a stick (Grey 1841, vol. 2, p.287). The most usual technique of taking the comb possum was to extricate it from its haunt in a hollow tree. This species was widespread and broadly distributed all through the realm; it sheltered within the broken limbs of large timber.
