Separated from the mainland by Pumicestone Passage, the island is 34 km long and up to 8 km extensive. It sits on the north-western edge of Moreton Bay and the population is around 15,000. Bribie is the only offshore island in Queensland to be joined to the mainland by bridge. Much of the island is nationwide park, so it presents unspoiled bushland, plenty of sandy white beaches and perfect opportunities for bushwalks, picnics, boating, tenting, fishing, swimming and birdwatching. It has 350 species of birds, as nicely as turtles, dugongs and dolphins.

The point where this happened he marked on his chart as Point Skirmish. The name remains to be used of a point on Bribie Island, but now it refers to a unique part of the island. Way back close to the start of European settlement, Matthew Flinders took with him on his travels an Aboriginal man by the name of Bongaree (or Bong-ree as some called him) from the Broken Bay area close to Sydney. So this man was with Flinders and his boatload of sailors when the naval captain landed on the northern shores of what he, following James Cook, known as Glass House Bay. Flinders did not realise that he was stepping ashore on an island – Bribie Island.
